If you install the right font and set your template up just so, you might be able to get something that looks right. But it's going to be a lot harder to keep things together over the whole screenplay. What are you going to do when your dialogue continues over a page break? Are you going to retype every character name, every time? And every location every time? And not make any minor mistakes/variations? With work, and jumping through hoops, you can make a Word document look close enough to screenplay format to not offend any readers' delicate eyes. But it's a lot more work than is necessary. Professionals aren't idiots. They use Final Draft (or I guess Fade In now) for a reason. This might be a dumb question but what's to say you can't use a regular Word doc and just Enter/Tab accordingly? If you know the screenplay format, I don't really see why it matters what program you use to write it. It's not a dumb question, but it's a redundant question now. No one in this thread recommended or encouraged you to use Microsoft Word when writing screenplays (with a screenplay template). If you want to write in Fountain, then that's fine, but you'll still need to copy/paste or export into Fountain friendly application or website. I doesn't matter what program you use. What matters is the output. There are better applications to use than Microsoft Word for writing screenplays. Screenplay specific applications were made for a reason.
